For cryptogenic stroke, or ESUS, it is reasonable to screen for hypercoagulable states (by labs), arterial disease (intra and/or extra-cranial atherosclerosis, dissection, or vasculitis by MRA or CTA), and of course Atrial Fibrillation (by long-term event monitor, such as patch or loop recorder); obtain these tests before attributing PFO as stroke etiology.
