Cool car. Have you checked the build plates etc to confirm the original engine etc? That looks way to well put together to be an engine swap. Not one piece of shitty wiring to be seen anywhere! 😄 Mazda Australia test rig?

I've seen vids on cleaning and sealing fuels tanks!
Great little project 👍

It will be very interesting following the build and see the history you learn about it.

Nice, it is certainly an interesting little thing. I would possibly suspect someone had an old 'track only' imported FWD non turbo Familia and just reshelled it into a locally delivered 4 door body because it was available, or something similar. Up until the mid 2000s, we had the 15 year rule, and the only way to get a legit JDM late model car would be import one cut in half and reshell it to an Aussie body.

Unusual to see a BF 4 door with rear disc brakes. All non-turbo BF's (323's) had rear drum brakes in the USA. Also the 1.6 twin cam in it, only Mazda's here is the USA that got the 1.6 twin cam was the GTX/GT's and all were turbo. I have a 1989 323GTX currently. Good luck on the restoration.

The wheels and seats are identical to those that came standard in the Australian delivered 323 limited. A very rare model. It's quite possible that those wheels and seats were standard on Japanese domestic market cars too though. The Australian delivered awd turbo 323s had completely different wheels and seats to those in yours. It's definitely a good thing this project of yours!

I'll add that it looks like a lot of upgrade parts were added to this 323. Brakes/engine/GTX rear hatch/seats. The seats are very similar to the GTX/GT with the bolstering.

Nice find, don't see many four door hatch's around, looking forward to seeing the project come to life, I'm lucky enough to have the two door 4wd DOHC Turbo Hatch over in New Zealand

Give it that jdm/euro hot hatch look, it would suit that body style so well 👌

I had a 1987 Mazda 323 sedan when I was a kid. It broke down and got scrapped. I’m looking to restore one now. If anyone wants to sell theirs I’m looking to buy. I prefer white.
