The lore doesn't say he fought the darkin head on nor does it say he took the darkin powers for himself making him equal to one, he absorbed enough power to renew his flesh to last longer than it should. As it says "enough" he may of been able to absorb just a fraction of the power and most of it is just poof gone, or permeates the place of it's death waiting for a host and then we have a new rivalry in league, a reborn darkin hunting down the man that betrayed them.... didn't think of that till I started writing but I kind of like it.
