Here we go and welcome to this tutorial. I will guide you through all the necessary things and steps you need to know when building your own NVME external SSD. In the end, your external drive will be faster or cheaper than everything else you find on the market right now. Just let me know in the comments what you have built and if there is any feedback for me. I really appreciate it.

Great vid! Amazing to learn that an enclosure cost so much. Thought they were just cases and connectors.

Well done removing the mystery around NVMe for external use. I've recently built one myself and I did encounter a problem. Using ANY NVMe drive could be a problem because the performance figures stated are usually include write caching, something which doesn't make sense to enable on a plug and play USB drive. While the drive I bought (Kingston A2000 - 500GB) quotes Read/Write of 2.2GB/s and 2GB/s, the actual write speed without caching is 500MB/s, which is what you will get from an external SATA SSD over a USB3.2 Gen 1 connection (5gbps). As such it isn't really double the speed. Only top end drives can actually sustain over 1GB/s writes without caching, which lowers the value proposition of this option somewhat.

Why add the extra heat spreader? Metal on metal contact is worse than thermal pad to metal, right? Or am I missing something?

Built the portable sst drive from the components on your video. It was easy, but when I connected to either my computer or laptop, it wasn't recognized. Looking at the power lite, it comes on for a minute or so and goes off. Help.

Great video. When I have some extra cash I would like to build one and see if I am able to write from a NVMe drive that is usb c to usb c. I have a Blackmagic pocket cinema and that would be the way I would write to the drive.

Is this good for the long run?, I'm trying to find a budget ssd that can store my data which is more durable than a hard drive

That’s a horrible enclosure. How would you take the NVME out if needed?

Cut the talking. Get to the point and show us what the enclosure is capable to deliver which wasn’t even properly demonstrated.
