Comb with some water;
Comb with some lather;
Comb after oil to help with the slather.
Comb a snag gently,
Then run it down free;
Shape with a brush and some heat don't you see.
Finish with butter or wax from a bee,
Then twirl your moustache and watch some Dan C.

Bottom up. I definitely have to work out tangles gently.

I’ve never thought about another option, so root to tip for me. Thanks for the video!

Finally something I’ve done right all these years. I do it the same way you do it. It always just felt strange doing it the other way no other reason than that for me.

I comb like you just what I've always done since the first time ever growing a beard and finding your channel and videos. It just feels right and from my opinion I feel doing it that way gives your beard that nice finishing touch with styling. I feel the other way will leave everything out of place to me.

I usually go root 2 tip unless the beard is 2 tangled

I'm right with you, Trusted Teacher. Root to tip on both head and beard. I'm convinced the professional advice is better, but I guess I don't have major problems with snags or breakage and the "correct" method just seems too tedious to me. Love starting with a wooden pick, then a wide tooth ox horn come and finishing up with a fine tooth ox horn comb.

Root to tip always seemed right to me. Never thought about it. Now that I read these comments though, I may need to try brushing my daughter's hair tip to root. Need to ask Melissa about that...

I usually go root to tip ... GENTLY! If I do happen to hit a snag, I allow the Chicago comb "deflect" over that area and return on the next pass to work out the snarl. I then smooth everything in the area back out and carry on.

One comment and question on your using the comb prior to oil; I use the oil on my damp beard BEFORE the initial comb through for the simple reason that the oil reduces drag and (potentially) saves a couple beard hairs from being yanked out. It works well for me, particularly because I have a wavy-to-wiry beard with uneven textures throughout.

I think tip to root is more for tangles. The only reason I say that is because that's what works when brushing/combing my daughter's hair. For my beard it's root to tip though. I don't get many tangles and I think that having a strict grooming routein (wash/oil/butter etc) helps that. Plus, it just "feels right" to do it that way

Beard: like Dan, start at the root, work to tip (my beard is about 7-8 inches)
Head hair: the exact opposite. Tip to root, slowly working out all snags and tangles (all my hair is almost to my waist). Then brush all the way though, root to tip.
Thought process: my beard hair is a completely different coarseness in comparison to my head hair. Maybe it's not long enough (yet) to get tangles, but I don't seem to have the same problem as my head hair. I always am cognizant of the fact that it is best to spread the oil from the skin to the hair.

I just did a reset and im on day 23..ive been combing root to tip, i start with my boars hair brush in the morning before beard oil, apply my oil then once more root to tip with the boars hair brush, then another quick comb with my chicago comb number 1, ihave a number 8 too for when it gets longer -Pete

I always start from the bottom and work my way up. Its how I did it with long hair too. I think its easy to get the tangles and knots out that way.

Thanks for sharing. I believe it really is a matter if preference while using basic principles such as, don't fight the comb, let it do the work. Each individual has to learn how their beard responds to different methods and situations that are applied...The most important of all, enjoy your beard journey. Thank you Dan for your solid info and positive inspiration.

I start with the root to help spread products and then tip to help style!

I’ve been starting with the bottom for a while now because that’s what people tell you to do for your hair, and I started growing my hair before growing my beard longer. So I just transferred that advice!
