On March 16, 1910, Barney Oldfield set a land speed record of 131 mph in the new sport of auto racing. That record would be surpassed several times, with Andy Green breaking the speed record – and the sound barrier – as he reached a speed of 763 mph in 1997. Charles Osgood reports in this "Almanac" originally broadcast in 2003.
