If I’m going to now cut your image (for example) on red vinyl, will this now cut out where you have inserted the text?

I want to use a shape to cut part of a letter in half, (For example the 2nd bump or 'n" shape from the letter "m") The outline of the text, the shape on top and pathfinders open. Although every action doesn't work. I don't know what I did wrong. Does the (rectangle) need to be filled in in order for pathfinder to work? Thank you to anyone that can give me some tips!
