New South Wales has experienced a dramatic two days of seismic activity, shaking the region and catching the attention of both locals and seismologists. It all started on August 23, 2024, when a magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck near Denman, causing widespread concern and prompting safety measures across the area. Just 24 hours later, another earthquake hit the same region, this time measuring a magnitude 4.5. Both events occurred near the Mount Arthur Coal Mine, raising questions about the potential links between mining activities and seismic events.

These two main quakes, along with numerous aftershocks ranging from magnitudes 2.5 to 3.2, have kept the region on edge, illustrating the volatile nature of the Earth's crust in this area. The tremors have led to power outages, structural damage, and the evacuation of schools, highlighting the real-world impacts of these natural events. In this video, we delve into the details of these back-to-back earthquakes, exploring their causes, the science behind the seismic activity, and what it means for the future of this region. Join us as we uncover the story behind New South Wales' recent seismic upheaval and what it reveals about the forces shaping our planet.

Experienced the 89 earthquake. It felt and sounded like the house had been hit by a truck. The quakes on Friday and Saturday were startling with a boom sound, and shook the house pretty good for a few seconds. Excellent video.

Our grandpa was on a bus trip before the 89 Newcastle quake, he'd sat at the bar in the pub where the roof later collapsed. I've only felt a few "small" quakes in Victoria, it's such a bizarre sensation. Fear too think what magnitude 5 or above would feel like, if 5 is 10x stronger than 4, and 6 is 10x stronger than 5, and 7 is 10x stronger than 6, and so on .. ..

What is so cool to me is that back in my earlier days, one never heard about earthquakes in places one would never expect, such as Poland, Oklahoma, The Sandwich Island region, etc. Now I can track these things daily, even smaller ones. It's akin to video games like Pong vs Elden Ring.

Yeah, I am showing my age lol.

Never could fathom that a boring, sleepy town like Armidale could ever experience earthquakes. Life can occasionally be interesting.
