A strong earthquake struck Puerto Rico early Tuesday, January 7, the latest in a series of quakes to hit the U.S. territory in recent days, damaging homes and toppling buildings.

READ MORE: The 6.4-magnitude quake was located near the southern coastal city of Ponce, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, revising its initial reading of 6.6-magnitude. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert immediately after the quake was reported, but it was later cancelled.

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority says power was been shut off across the the entire island after the auto protection systems in all of its power plants were activated. Governor Wanda Vazquez says all non-essential government employees have been given the day off.

The island has been shaken by numerous quakes of varying degrees since the night of December 28. A 5.8-magnitude quake on Monday leveled several homes in the southern coastal town of Guanica and destroyed a coastal rock formation known as Punta Ventana in nearby Guayanilla. The formation, shaped like a round stone window, was a popular tourist attraction.

PRAYER FOR PUERTO RICO...
Heavenly Father, in the name of your son Jesus Christ, we lift up all those who have been affected by any of these earthquakes in Puerto Rico... All those who were hurt, those who lost a loved one or lost their home.
We pray that you will comfort them in this desperate time, that you fill them with your peace and love. Strengthen them Lord in this time of desperation and loss. We pray that the needs of these will be met in every way Lord... All for your glory... Amen!

I live in Tallaboa & the ground hasn't stopped shaking. If you look at seismic activity for the past 10 days it's all day every day. I told a friend from San Juan if he drove to Penuelas, Guayanilla, Yauco or Guanica & stood anywhere for an hour he would experience significant seismic activity. Bingo! He couldn't believe the sequencing. He got more than one before he got out of dodge.

the buildings collapse because they are made with cheap concrete, poor rebar reinforcement and generally bad engineering practices with no building code enforcement to speak of.... notice in the video the other buildings are just fine?... ever wonder why?

To all those ranting about building codes... Earthquakes are NOT common in PR. At least not before 2020. Now we get hundreds per day.

The island was hit more than 500 earthquakes with magnitude 2 and above within the last two weeks. Unfortunately, widespread structural damage occurred. Hope that 6.4 event will remain as the mainshock, and there won't be any bigger event. The monitoring of structures for earthquakes is an absolute necessity to prevent further losses.
