Update: they are doing fresh servers to celebrate the 20th anniversary which launch on November 21st and will eventually carry over into TBC about a year from now.

The entire reason for Classic was to protect the old versions of the game with copyright. There have been several challenges to old MMO's copyright that allow you to have private servers of games that are no longer offered. By offering them they protected those old versions of the game. It's why you will always have a "era" server. They never wanted to make Classic, thought it would be a huge failure. When it wasn't they then tried to make it a retail gateway drug.

The key game design factors of Vanilla that the new Blizzard devs don't understand are:

A familiar, open world that exudes a feeling of freedom. That is a home for many and never changes.

The feeling of having the freedom to do what I want at any time and everything I do has value and meaning at the same time and also leads to the goal. But how, with whom and for how long the whole thing happens is something I decide to a large extent, freely myself.

In this world that we know, there are many encounters. And here too I am free to decide how I behave towards others. And these encounters are what make the game so magical.

This also includes encounters that are referred to as griefing. It is part of the freedom of the game. It is the player's freedom that is always conspicuously the focus in Vanilla and is suppressed in retail.

As soon as the player feels compelled to do something, the fun is lost.

And anyone who hasn't played it intensively themselves won't understand it. That was in the minds of the developers back then who designed Vanilla.

I do appreciate TWoW for trying to live up to that vanilla experience the players want. I've been hearing rumors of the turtle devs wanting to do a scarlet crusade & wow grim batol classic raid. Hopefully that's in development.

The community was always bad. In fact, it was dangerous and even to a criminal degree.

But if you just join a good guild, interact with good people, do fun things and disengage from the so-called "community", you should be able to enjoy the game. That's how it was for me from 2019 onwards.

The only problems that really reach a player who plays like this are:
1. Minor AH inflation (never made me anywhere close to broke tho)
2. GDKP cancer (SR pugs were extremely scarce, so if you wanted to raid everything for every lockout, you basically had to stoop down low and join one)
3. Rampant botting (this literally just crushes your soul and is the backbone of the aforementioned problems)
4. Barely ever being able to do world bosses
5. Having to read messages that say "kekw"
6. Not being able to farm Devilsaur Leather, Black Lotuses and other open world resources
7. Not being able to reach R14
8. Queueing against nothing but premades
9. Leveling slower than everyone else, because everyone is buying gold and buying boosts from 1-60
10. Getting insulted by people for "only parsing 80 in naxx"
11. Getting insulted by people for choosing an inoptimal race/class combination
12. Getting banned from global chat channels
13. Having your guild infiltrated and spied on by the opposite faction to sabotage you
14. Getting dispelled and ganked
15. Only finding tanks that want unwanted loot
16. Only finding healers who want all Dark Runes
17. Getting undercut in the AH by bots
18. Getting griefed
19. Getting doxed
20. Getting banned by mass reporters when you do something a "top guild" disagrees with (like trying to get Devilsaur Leathers)
21. Making your gold farms feel completely redundant when others just raid log and buy gold
22. Backhanded clandestine dealings between actual Blizzard employees and players make the entire game feel rotten to the core (like the whole RestedXP thing)
23. Never having any chance at becoming a Scarab Lord

Other than that, it's an awesome game and I can't wait for a fresh official server. And no, I will never play in an illegal private server. That's breaking the law!

Hey Alex, so do you pretty much play WoW in your own 'seasons'? Typically just when there's a new server? Do you have a pattern of when you stop playing? Do you have any goals for when a server launches? Do you just enjoy the leveling, dungeoning, pre-bis grind and then quit or do you complete all raiding content and then quit or? I quit when Cata Classic launched, didn't really rate the expac back in the day, although I did complete a few of the earlier raids, so didn't go back for Cata Classic. Played SoD for a bit but meh doing Classic Era stuff all over again with some extra abilities tbh. Haven't subbed since.

I have heard ruminations of a Classic Fresh, which would be cool, but actually I'd much rather start from TBC again just because I played the c**p out of Classic back when the pandemic hit, completed Naxx like 10 times as well as all the other raids, so I'm kinda done with it forever. I really enjoyed TBC Classic, there's a certain charm about it that makes me want to play it all again.

At this point i just hope some genius come up with a real Classic+ pserver which respect Vanilla and adds elements WITH CARE. (or Nostalrius2). Thanks for the update

I stopped playing DD as well, WoW in general. Got to lvl60 on my Druid there but after that I thought "what's the point"

Phase 4 was delayed a month to make it line up better with War Within release. If phase 4 released in June like it should have then that means phase 5 would've released around Sept 10/17 which is right when War Within raids start... So they had to delay it a month.

Last time I tried Retail was Legion which was ok but not for me. SoD was filled with retail garbage - stopped in P1. Did DD Alliance - noticed gatekeeping and stopped. I just want to play classic version of WoW with decent NA pop, no lag, and a community that probably no longer exists in gaming. Im playing Once Human and have noticed its community is a bunch of shitlords - hiding info and exploiting early while being smug about it. I dont think this era of Devs/Gamers care about game health, they just wait for the new shiny thing/gold mine.
