Information is still a little scarce on this subject, but we wanted to at least make you aware of what was going on. This has the potential to be VERY bad for everyone that keeps reptiles. Go to your local reptile shop and ensure that you have lights to keep your animals warm for the foreseeable future.

From what I researched, it seems that not ALL incandescent bulbs are banned. There are plenty of exceptions, including for things like animal and plant care. They might end up being more expensive, but they won't be completely gone.

As someone who raises chickens, this will affect farmers as well. Chicks need a high heat and most of us use heat lamps. This is most definitely scary

I think it’s important to be prepared but we also don’t want to create a crisis by clearing the shelves and hoarding bulbs when others may be in need of them. We don’t want another toilet paper crisis on our hands.

They've been banned here in Ireland/Europe for years we just put in an exception for animal heating bulbs. Downside is if you were using regular bulbs to heat it's gonna be a lot more expensive, trade off is reptile bulbs tend to last a lot longer if from a good manufacturer

I researched this legislation years ago, when it was first passed (but not yet implemented). To my understanding, “specialty” bulbs were all exempt from the ban. Bulbs used for agriculture or animal husbandry were explicitly mentioned as exceptions to the new regulations… Even novelty “party bulbs” (those blue, green, red, etc. incandescents they sell at Party City or around Halloween) were allowed. I don’t understand why ZooMed is facing this issue… Is it because of how they classify or market their bulbs? Is this just a “change the label” issue? 🤔

Reading into it, this ban excludes infrared and multi purpose bulbs such as grow lights. It’s really meant for household bulbs. I do not think that if will effect the reptile hobby but if it does, I’d just add another socket for a heat emitter and a full spectrum led light to be next too it. I do not know what led bulbs will put out the necessary uvb for a desert species but I’m sure there are options and on the plus side, ceramic emitters and led lights to last longer than say a mercury vapor bulb. From my understanding though, the ban isn’t going to effect those as they are multiple purpose and not solely house lighting bulbs

Adding to this - zoo & conservation efforts, which the AZA/SSP (Aquarium Zoo Association/Species Survival Program) & UN (United Nations) should be also upping their game to say 'Hey, people may not need these lights, but these animals absolutely do to ensure both species survival, as well as the reptile industry. So - this is absolutely a huge thing!

It's not just homes that need these lamps, but zoos and farms - especially poultry farms. I think ones for animal husbandry will be allowed just not the every day "light bulb". Thanks for the heads up.

I’m overly sensitive to LED’s and it triggers migraines with stroke symptoms. I’m a huge advocate for keeping lighting choices available. You’d think that incandescent lighting is as bad a cocaine these days 🙄

Incandescent and halogen bulbs have been "banned" in CA for a few years now, but only for household use. Specialty-use bulbs, like for heating reptiles, are still legal and readily available.

I dislike leds for home lighting in general. They are intentionally built with planned obsolescence. I've seen leds burn out at the same time within a day or two of each other. It's a scam, real leds will rarely if ever go bad. We need to boycott the industries when they make these products to fail on a set schedule so they get more money.

They've done this in the UK and Europe already - except there's the exception for reptiles so we have to get out bulbs are reptile stores - can't go to the local DIY store for bulbs

I don’t understand why the government has to be so darn stupid of banning something that is actually beneficial for animals to survive. I don’t know don’t understand.

I had 34 years with my boa constrictor. Used a lamp the whole time. She used to have a hot rock too, but eventually I switched to just the lamp. She passed in 2019, and I haven't had a snake since. I now buy books about snakes to fill that place in my heart. Best wishes for everyone who currently keeps reptiles. This may be a temporary supply chain issue, but I'm sure it will get straigtened out.

UK already stopped incandescent bulbs in 2019. There is some exemptions and that includes the reptile basking bulbs.

Hey Kevin, reach out to John Courtney Smith from Arcadia. Because T5's etc are also being banned but apparently there is a clause in these acts that they cant ban T5 that are manufactured specifically for animal needs, I would imagine that there will be the same clause regarding heat lamps too, it will mean that people wont be able to buy the cheaper lamps without pet specific branding, however I am in the UK.

I just looked into this but it seems heat bulbs are exempt. At least according to everywhere im looking.

I hope they make an exception for the reptile lights. I have 3 reptiles that need these bulbs, yesterday i just bought 4 bulbs since i used my last one on hand. Guess I'll have to stock up like its TP in 2020! Thanks Kevin for letting us all know 😊

Dont reptile lights count under the "specialty heat bulbs" that are listed as an exemption to the ban?
