This however changed as the war went on and from 1943 onwards much fewer German soldiers were granted leave.

There you could divide the Soviet and German soldiers into two different groups. The soldiers who retreated to Moscow from Stalingrad. Without air support. They fought practically with their bare hands. Who knocked out the professional backbone of the German army. And the soldiers who were advancing on Germany. Forty-three-forty-four. There was already a different situation. The Germans were demoralized and with poor supplies, untrained soldiers. The Soviet troops had everything they needed. The spirit of the Soviet soldiers was on the rise. In addition, people had already learned how to fight properly. They were already professionals. The bulk of them then went to fight against the Japanese

After Kursk battle it became fairly easy to get medical leave for Soviet solders, and that is probable reason for huge reported losses. Many veterans of early war got medical leave for minor injuries in 1943 and later and people with moderate injuries like Mikhail Kalasnikov never returned to front line. Meanwhile in later war Germans would often got field bandaged to immediately return to unit. In late 1944 they could get sausage in Warsaw only as POWs.

That’s the difference between a government that didn’t want war but was forced into it and loved its people and took care of them vs a government that wanted war and forced it and hated its people and made them suffer. The German soldiers had higher morale and were fighting for their homeland, their continent and the world and they knew it and so that’s why they fought until the very end unlike the Red Armt who had low morale and would have collapse had Moscow fallen. Many Russians and other nationalities joined the Germans and saw them as liberators and more would have instantly fled the Soviet Union if they saw a bigger chance to get away from it

The Soviets biggest weapon was bodies, 1 million men could have died and they could easily replace them, and that’s what they did and why millions of Soviets died in the war, they were cannon fodder

The Soviet soldiers did not need holidays because they did not survive long enough. Those at the front lines were always new ones.
