That is basically what happened, Icarus was drunk on freedom and it made him grow careless and forget his fathers warnings

"one must imagine Icarus Flappy"

If I read the story correctly, the flight of Icarus is a cautionary tale about always operating within your aircraft's design structural limitations as found in the Pilot's Operating Handbook.

I forgot about that aspect of the story, that's pretty interesting. Thinking about it now, I feel like another way that part of the myth could apply to the metaphor is as another kind of hubris. Something like 'flying to close to the sun'=being oblivious to danger while 'flying to close to the sea'=deliberately seeking out danger.

It’s also worth noting that there’s the story of Bellerophon specifically teaching the moral for which people misuse Icarus.

I think a fun metaphor is also that it wasn't Daedalus who fell. he built the wings, he know their worth and their limits. Icarus inherited that power, he had no respect for it. It's a story about inheritance and entitlement. For example, look to the "good emperors" of Rome, what did they have in common? None was born to the throne, childless regents create stable lineages.

Its amazing how little people actually read this. The story isn’t about hubris at all Icarus was just a kid given a tool he had no real hope to use properly. Bellerophon is a much better example he tried to fly to Olympus but was bucked or stuck down.

I thought the story was a cautionary tale to not disregard everyones suggestions to not be so pridful thinking you are always right in the prusuit of your ambitions

The image of them being struck down the second they try to take to the sky’s is killing me rn, like imagine a lightning bolt just smiting them the instant they get a millimeter off the ground.

Aristotle's "golden mean" metaphorically.

that whole story is poseidon and apollo fighting over who gets icarus /j

Knowing your son died because you made a pair of wings is enough of a punishment

Honestly that’s accurate to both the story and the metaphor it stands for today

I could've sworn he had a brother than flew too close to the sea, causing his wings to basically dissolve off, but apparently that was only a warning his father also gave and not two brothers dying different ways

Daedalus will always be the best adventures of Hercules villain to me. (Mask of Vulcan a close second, would've been unstoppable if chin straps were invented back then)

Fly too close to the sun, the wax melts. Fly too close to the water, the feathers get soaked.

Ok but he literally was doing that. His dad was like stay in the middle goddammit and he was like the ocean and sun are so pretty

Theres also a version where it was the sea he flew too close to

Which makes you wonder, what would Posiedon have done instead of Helios?
