Present Continuous Tense

Tense : Tenses play a crucial role in the English language. It denotes the time an action takes place, whether sometime in the
past, in the present or will take some time in the future.
Tense

We use the Present Continuous Tense
❖ The Present Continuous Tense represents an action as going on at the time of speaking; as:
Eg: 1) Shweta is singing.
2) Mother is cooking dinner.
❖ It is used to denote a temporary action which may not be necessarily happening at the time of speaking.
Eg: 1) These days I am revising English syllabus.
Expressions like these days, now a days may be used in sentences like this.

❖ It is also used to denote an action about to take place in the near future.
Eg: 1) We are shifting to our new house next week. 2) We are playing a friendly match next week.
This form is used to suggest a definite arrangement in the near future. The time is almost always given (tomorrow, next week).
❖ To describe an action that is going on during this period of time : Eg: 1) Are you still working for the same company?
2) More and more people are becoming vegetarian. ❖ To describe a temporary event or situation
Eg: 1) He usually plays the drums, but he is playing guitar tonight.
2) The weather forecast was good, but it is raining at the moment.

Present Continuous Tense : Form
Affirmative Form : is/am/are + verb + ing
Negative Form : is/am/are + not + verb + ing Interrogative Form : is/am/are put before the subject
Positive
I am singing nicely. He is reading.
She is dancing. You are playing. They are sleeping. It is raining.
Negative
I am not singing nicely. He is not reading.
She is not dancing. You are not playing. They are not sleeping. It is not raining.
Interrogative
Am I singing nicely? Is he reading?
Is she dancing?
Are you playing? Are they playing?
Is it raining?

Present Continuous Tense :
In the passage given the words printed in the bold letter are in the Present Continuous Tense.
I am waiting for a bus. Some other people are also waiting for it. We are all standing in a queue. There is a hawker also. What is the hawker selling? Is he selling nuts? No, he is selling newspapers. Why is that little girl crying? She is crying because she cannot see her parents around.
