Another way in doing fractions is to convert each fraction to their percentage form which is: a) -5 1/2 = 550%; b) -3/4 = 75; c) 2 3/4 = 275%. Then you take the converted numbers (without the percentages of course): -550 -75 + 275 then calculate so: - 550 - 75 = -625 then - 625 + 275 = -350. This -350 needs to go over 100 because remember that you end up with a top heavy sum, therefore - 350/100 = 3 1/2 as a fraction - because how many 100s are there in 300? there are 3 and then you have 50 left over. Then 50/100 is simplified to 1/2. However, this is all well and good if in the exam they require just the answer and you forget how to do fractions but you know how to convert them to percentages. It is good to know both methods.
