WHY Lightsaber Duels Look So DIFFERENT In The Prequel Trilogy

George Lucas explains why lightsaber duels in the star wars prequel trilogy look so different to the lightsaber fights previously seen in the original star wars trilogy. George explains that he wanted to show the Jedi knights in their prime and at full skill during the prequels compared to what we saw in the original trilogy, namely old Jedi and part-machine sith lords with luke skywalker who was effectively an early level padawan.

I much prefer the lightsaber fights of the prequels vs the lightsaber fights of the disney sequel trilogy, even if the prequels were a bit too dance-like. what do you think?

Star Wars is an American epic space opera multimedia franchise created by George Lucas, which began with the eponymous 1977 film and quickly became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. The Star Wars franchise depicts the adventures of characters "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away", in which humans and many species of aliens (often humanoid) co-exist with robots (typically referred to in the films as 'droids'), who may assist them in their daily routines; space travel between planets is common due to lightspeed hyperspace technology. The planets range from wealthy, planet-wide cities to deserts scarcely populated by primitive tribes. Virtually any Earth biome, along with many fictional ones, has its counterpart as a Star Wars planet which, in most cases, teem with sentient and non-sentient alien life. The franchise also makes use of other astronomical objects such as asteroid fields and nebulae. Spacecraft range from small starfighters, to huge capital ships such as the Star Destroyers, to space stations such as the moon-sized Death Stars. Telecommunication includes two-way audio and audiovisual screens, holographic projections, and HoloNet (internet counterpart). The universe of Star Wars is generally similar to ours but its laws of physics are less strict allowing for more imaginative stories. One result of that is a mystical power known as the Force which is described in the original film as "an energy field created by all living things ... [that] binds the galaxy together". The field is depicted as a kind of pantheistic god. Through training and meditation, those whom "the Force is strong with" exhibit various superpowers (such as telekinesis, precognition, telepathy, and manipulation of physical energy). It is believed nothing is impossible for the Force. The mentioned powers are wielded by two major knightly orders at conflict with each other: the Jedi, peacekeepers of the Galactic Republic who act on the light side of the Force through non-attachment and arbitration, and the Sith, who use the dark side by manipulating fear and aggression. While Jedi Knights can be numerous, the Dark Lords of the Sith (or 'Darths') are intended to be limited to two: a master and their apprentice. Force-wielders are very limited in numbers in comparison to the population. The Jedi and Sith prefer the use of a weapon called a lightsaber, a blade of plasma that can cut through virtually any surface and deflect energy bolts. The rest of the population, as well as renegades and soldiers, use plasma-powered blaster firearms. As a result of galaxy-scaled politics (involving republics, empires, kingdoms, alliances, etc.), all this weaponry is made use of in various military conflicts during which most Star Wars material takes place. In the outer reaches of the galaxy, crime syndicates such as the Hutt cartel are dominant. Bounty hunters are often employed by both gangsters and governments. Illicit activities include smuggling.

The fact they had to slow down the fight between Maul, Qui-gon and Obi-wan was the best part

MAJOR props to Ewan McGregor: he really brought it to _every one_ of his lightsaber duels! 👍👍👍

Ray Park killed it. It’s a shame we only got to see one movie doing his thing as Darth Maul.

lol I like how George basically says “all the guys in the original trilogy sucked at sword fighting so I wanted some real shit for these movies”

For so many years people gave Lucas grief about the prequels- not appreciating how brilliant this duel was. Actual choreography between skilled actors who practiced for months to pull this off. Compared to the Disney garbage where actors wave sticks around in front of green screens and the entire fight is composited in during post.

I give credit to Ewen for being able to keep up with Ray, who is an actual martial artist and can move even faster!

We really should have been treated to seeing him again in the original idea for Ep.7 where Maul returns as the prime menace as ruler of the crime syndicates. Kennedy nixed all of that!

That double saber that maul has the way he was countering both of them was wild 🤪 at one point im like Maul is just showing off at this point he didn’t have to take both these guys on .

Fun fact: The actors became so good at the sword fighting techniques they literally had to slow down the camera for the actual film during the Duel of the Fates because they moved too fast and were so coordinated it was perfect… Remember when people use to hate on the Prequels? Now they seem like the best lol

I absolutely LOVE Qui Gon. We all do of course. However, the way Obi Wan just bolts out towards Maul with the first few clashes gives me chills every time! I can just hear him thinking "Yeah. You definitely f***ed up now..." after Maul force ghosted Qui Gon

The reason why I love Lightsaber so much is because they look like magic swords for one. And two it was the original trilogy that got me addicted to Star Wars. But the prequel trilogy just ignited my love for it on an even higher level. To hear Lightsaber hum to life, not only that when they clash it’s almost as if the energy of light versus dark The pure essence of good versus evil when the Lightsaber clash to me, it’s almost as if that’s their energy, that’s their emotion that is their essence.

It’s my sound weird to a lot of you or all of you. But that’s genuinely how I feel like when I hear each clash it’s not the same. It’s a different pitch a different hum, a different life energy that the Lightsaber give off. When I was a child. I genuinely thought that The red light sabers when I called them dark savers, funny enough, were fueled by hatred and that each time the red blade clash with either a blue blade or a green blade that was, you know the red blades, hateful energy clash, and can’t wait to break the good blade or the positive blade or the blue blade or the green blade. And I felt like the Jedi blade was pure positive emotionso of course it would clash with the hatred which is the color red. The imagination of a child, but still how that to this day that concept that idea exist within me because every time I hear Lightsaber clash my imagination from my childhood reemerges.
