Join us as we encounter one of the most intense lightning storms we've seen while sailing. With every flash of lightning and rumble of thunder, our nerves were rattled as the Bahamas transforms from paradise to a possible nightmare aboard our catamaran.

In this episode:
The sudden onset of a fierce lightning storm disturbs the tranquil Bahamian waters. We maintain our spirits as we plan for the worst but hope for the best.

🎶 MUSIC by Epidemic Sound

We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52.

We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google Translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speed test, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water.

Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our YouTube vlogging skills.

Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us, which is why we don’t monetize our channel.

This video is about Surviving The Biggest Lightning Storm: Sailing Catamaran Adventure - Ep. 68. But It also covers the following topics:

Sailing Through Thunderstorm
What To Do In A Lightning Storm On A Boat

✅ About Sailing AWEN.

Holly and Stephane are formerly from the San Francisco Bay Area but have a home in Tahoe. Our 'someday' plan was to sell our belongings, buy a boat, and, with reckless abandon, sail away to visit distant lands, which we did starting in 2020.

You can follow our transition and journey in our candid podcast, Covert Castaway, wherever you listen. You can also follow every stop we’ve made with pictures and blogs and stream our podcast directly on our website.

You ever notice sailing boats underway never seem to get hit by lightning? Always seems to be anchored boats. Always wondered if attaching copper wires to the side stays and dropping them in the water would help?

Hello Stephane, le grand monticule de terre quand vous étiez sur l’île est une termitière. C’est joli à regarder, mais attention, il y a souvent des serpents qui se cachent dedans !

We always watch all your beautiful videos, they are so pleasant and interesting to see at the same time, both the human and the technical profiles are very well present in your stories. Congratulations as usual.

I had one question: I see that you have both genoa and staysail in your sail configuration. Have you so far ever tacked or gybed the genoa with the staysail installed (altough closed)? Did the genoa has issues in passing by conflicting with the staysail closed or everything went smoothly? Clearly leaving both sails installed and decide which one to open depending on the wind conditions would be nice and comfortable, but I don't know if the genoa would then have troubles in passing from one side to the other with the staysail in the middle. We are considering to install a genoa in substitution of the self tacking jib, and answering this question would help us to understand if this worth doing or not. Thank you in advance and fair winds!

Risk management must be one of the hardest things to manage on board, preparation vs probability……good judgement vs good luck…lol. Might have considered two anchors for a better night’s sleep but even that comes with another set of problems to ponder….there must be the law of diminishing returns coming in to play with planning this situation?
