On September 23, Japanese F-15 and F-35 fighter jets fired warning missiles at a Russian Il-38 reconnaissance aircraft that violated Japanese airspace. According to The Wall Street Journal, this incident was the first time since 1958 that the Japanese Self-Defence Forces used warning salvos.

According to Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, the Russian Il-38 patrol aircraft violated Japanese airspace three times, flying over the waters of Rebun Island in the north of the Japanese archipelago.

Hayashi added that Japan sent Russia an “extremely strong protest” in connection with the violation of borders. As the publication notes, the Japanese Air Force twice transmitted warnings to the Russian aircraft demanding that it leave the country's airspace, but warning missiles were fired only after the third intrusion.

The publication's journalists asked the Russian Defence Ministry to comment on the situation, but the department did not respond to the request.

Observers note that in recent years, Russian military aircraft have increasingly operated near Japanese territory. In this case, the incident occurred against the backdrop of the second stage of the joint Russian-Chinese exercises "North - Interaction 2024", in which warships of the Russian Federation and the People's Liberation Army of China maneuvered in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan, as well as in the airspace above them.

"Conducted simultaneously with joint coastal guard and patrol exercises between China and Russia, the military maneuvers of China and Russia once again emphasized the high level of cooperation in the field of security and defence between the two countries, experts said," the Chinese publication Global Times writes in this regard.

According to the Japanese government, Russian aircraft violate Japanese airspace more often than others. Moreover, of the 48 recorded violations, 44 were committed by Soviet aircraft. The small island in the Sea of Japan is situated off the northwestern tip of Hokkaido, one of Japan's four main islands, and to the southwest of Russia's Sakhalin Island. To the east of it is the La Perouse Strait, an international waterway known as the Soya Strait. The aerial intrusion came as a total of nine Russian and Chinese warships transited the La Perouse Strait for exercise in the Sea of Okhotsk, situated to the east of the strait, on the same day. It was not clear whether the Il-38 was providing support to the joint flotilla.

Flares or missiles is not the issue here. Russia had no business being there so Japan has a sovereign right!

Japan's mistake was using warning shots. There should have been no warning after continued refusal to leave.

Some important information that weren't mentioned, since WWII Japan and Russia never made a peace treaty, so formal they are still in war. However a continuation of such action, would lead to a direct involvement of the US, because of the japanese and US security treaty. Recently Russia sold to old naval bases above north Korea to China, because China didn't had excess to the sea of Japan. And both countries start to build naval bases a round Japan. China also enter Japan's sea territory often with their ships and push Japanese fishers and coastguard out of their on territory. The same events of testing, how Nato members will responds, were seen before the invasion of Crimea.

Firing warning flares (neither intended nor capable of harm) is quite different from firing missiles. Facts. Get the facts.

I flew in an early passenger model, Ilyushin Il-18 during the Soviet period across eastern areas & Eurasia. It was from a passenger point of view terrible. It was unpressurized & flew at a lower altitude as a result right between the mountains. When making refueling stops all the crew & passengers disembarked moving to the opposite side of terminal building in case it blew up from fueling that could generate static electrical discharges. Landing was marked by bouncing down the landing strip a couple of times.

Inside the passenger cabin the bathrooms were toward the front of the aircraft. A wind flowed from front to rear without even the hint of air fresher. No food service except some stale peanuts in paper envelopes. The stop at Sevastopol was for fueling the evacuated aircraft. One passenger asked after 4 hours when we would leave. A rather heavy woman counter representative stated, "Sit down & be quite".

I'm not sure why the Japanese wasted expensive ammunition warning the IL-38s. The aircraft could have just fallen out of the sky if their fighter aircraft had made near by passes.

I think there’s a translation issue. Flares were ejected as a warning NOT MISSILES.
