Ableton Drift is a powerful new instrument that every single owner of Ableton gets for free with the new 11.3 update. Whether you own lite, intro, standard or suite, this amazing and super musical little guy is yours. The design idea behind Drift was to create a synthesizer that largely behaves much like old school vintage mono and poly synths that have tiny inconsistencies in pitch, filtering, and phase. When these aspects of the synth "drift" around, you get that all illusive but so musical sound that is very difficult to achieve in the digital world. The filters are also designed to behave like real analog filters which behave differently depending on how much gain they receive. What may seem like a simple synth on the surface hides many really awesome features such as the ability to turn envelopes into LFOs or LFOs into envelopes, FM and AM synthesis, variable wave shapes in oscillator 1 and so on. In this video we get under the hood of this incredible sonic tool.

Drift has so much depth and personality for how simple it is, and it's so refreshing to see a synth with opinionated / tasteful tweaks and stacking. It's so much better IMO than a typical synth that needs a ton of tweaking and automating to get it to sound ok.

I've been researching synth history for some videos I'm making soon, and most of the classic, famous synths from the first couple decades of the golden era of analog aside from the mini, were 2 oscillator. It was the strive to making a 2 osc stand out at a competitive price that brought us innovations like pulse width modulation and sync.

Awesome video. I just started using it last night and without knowing half of what you just showed in this video I got some great sounds out of it that were surprisingly full. I have a prophet rev2 and a moog sub37 and I can tell you this instrument sounds just as warm and analog as those instruments do. Bravo to Ableton and thank you for this great demonstration. Cheer.
