The dislikes might be because you assume something from previous knowledge. But what if you did not know that tan(x)' = sec^2(x)?

Even if you don't know the derivative of tan(x) then maybe you know that tan(x) = sin(x)/cos(x) and then you know that sec(x) = 1/cos(x) and you know the how to differentiate fractions and so you know that there will be a cos(x)^2 at the bottom if you differentiate tan(x) and you may get the idea of trying to differentiate tan(x) using sin(x)/cos(x) and end up getting the result that you wanted? Just saying.

For the hell of it, I made it tan^2x+1, took u as tanx, got integral[(u^2+1)/(u^2+1)]
= u + c
= tanx + c
