It was Oni, Akuma's fully possessed version, that punched a hole in his chest and the punch not only killed Ryu but pumped a ton of Dark Hadou into him basically resurrecting him into Evil Ryu. He's just an alternate version of what could happen and is completely unrelated to Kage.

what I found interesting is that if you say Evil Ryu in Japanese, his name becomes more badass. "Evil" in Japanese is "Aku" and since "Ryu" means "Dragon" his Japanese name can be typed as "Aku-Ryu" which can be translated directly into "Evil Dragon".

Fun fact: a lot of people get Kage confused for Evil Ry but theres a difference
Evil Ryu is Ryu possessed by the satsui no hado but Kage is the physical manifestation of the satsui no hado, a seperate being to ryu

In an early version of SFV, there is an in game model of Ryu with wrappings coving his torso. You can kind of see underneath the gauze, of what looks like a round, hole shaped wound.

This was when the game was in its earlier concept stages, where they wanted to make it darker and more 'realistic'.

Always thought it was a reference to the Ryu Final manga. During the final chapters where Ryu and Akuma duel to the death, Akuma punched through Ryu's chest(while having fatal organs evaded) where it was actually Ryu's tactic to trap Akuma up close, to give him a single hand close contact Hadouken, and thus destroying Akuma's body and defeating him.

In the Asuras Wrath DLC you can see why Ryu has that hole. It is because of the asura`s fist. I prefer that version

I prefer Evil Ryu over Ryu because at least the evil variants strongest supers or ultra combos aren't just "I'm gonna throw a slightly bigger fireball at you even though I already throw fireballs as a super", and it's not even the denjin hadoken that electrocutes or stuns the opponent it's just a bigger version of the thing he already does.

Nah he got that hole in his chest when he fought Asura in the Asura's Wrath DLC which awoken Evil Ryu.
