This is quite possibly one of my favorite Sorted videos ever. Firstly, I gotta say, as a Taiwanese-American, it warms my heart to see so much East Asian cuisine featured on this channel over the last few months. Secondly, of course, I gotta ride for my green onion pancakes and pork floss. Can't go wrong with it. Thanks for the channel for inspiring me to cook and learn about different cultures through food!

Hey, Viewer from Taiwan here.
Never thought I would see a dish from my country appear on Sorted!
That dish "Cong Zhua Bing" (Ben's pronunciation is not exactly... correct, but I don't blame him cause mandarin is fuckin hard) essentially describes what it is in name.
"Cong" (pronounced closer to "tsong") is scallions, which is what's in the pancake. "Zhua" means "grab", which describes the final step before its served. The vendor would crimple the pancake (with hands or utensils) to crack and create flakes on the outer layer to give it more of a crispy texture. "Bing" is just simply "pancake/pastry".
Therefore, the more common literal translation for this dish is "Scallion Pancake".
As with the filling, we've reached a point where we put pretty much anything in it, but the most common filling you can find at a vendor is eggs with Basil leaves. Cheese, corn and other types of pork (ham, bacon...etc.) are also indeed very common.

While I don't even wanna go into the intricacies of pronouncing pljeskavica correctly, haha, here's a friendly tip that may come in handy when pronouncing food names from the Balkan region — in Serbian language (as well as Bosnian, Croatian, Bulgarian, and Macedonian), the letter J is read as Y, so ajvar would sound something like "eyevar, " for example.

However, I don't think ajvar is used that often as a garnish with pljeskavica. Traditionally, ajvar is "zimnica", which we use as a term that encompasses a variety of side dish and garnish we prepare for the winter when there are no fresh vegetables. A lot of families pickle and ferment their own veggies, so you have ajvar (and similar dishes in jars with different flavor profiles and ingredients), bottled tomato (not ketchup!), various jams, and "turšija, " which is basically a giant jar/barrel where we pickle a mix of veggies, such as carrots, tomato, paprika, cauliflower, and so on. Oh, and we also ferment cabbage and use it for delicious stuff like sarma (cabbage rolls)!

As far as pljeskavica goes, the secret trick is to dice fresh onion and mix it with the minced meat before you prepare the meat. You can also add some spices to the meat or even some chilli peppers! Also, while there are several ways you can prepare pljeskavica, the best way would be on a grill and using wood as a fire source. The meat will absorb all that yummy smokey flavor and add a whole new dimension to pljeskavica.

If you're ever having a barbecue, make sure to give it a try and make your own because I'm positive you won't be disappointed <3

as a Vietnamese/Laotian american, i was sooo happy to see banh cuon on todays episode! Excellent job by Jamie for knowing it right away! But in Barry's defense, bahn cuon has definitely made its way in laotian culture too! :D

Did not expect Pljeskavica to make an appearance, I live close to the border of Serbia and it's quite common to find it here in Romania as well ..I love that thing

I didn’t feel like cooking at all yesterday and was in the process of ordering a takeout. While doing so I was watching a Sorted video where Ebbers had cooked a duck breast… fast forward a little, I ended up cooking a full on roast chicken dinner and closed the takeout app…. Thanks guys for the constant inspiration 🙂

What a episode! Must be said, the ability of the “normals” here to identify region, and even more so influences, is simply stunning. That Baz pulled out the tie was simply shocking, and Ben couldn’t have delivered that little uppercut any better. The man was beaming for pete’s sake! The breaker condition was kind of a throwaway, though a logical one. It really drove home the idea that you don’t need to travel the world to connect with its cuisine, repeatedly it would seem, though I’m sure that helps. I really need to “food travel” more. Thanks folks!

It warms my heart to see something from 🇧🇴 Bolivia!! My mum used to feed the hot version of Api to me as a child for breakfast and it was my absolute favourite 🥰 my mother grew up in Bolivia and we live in NZ so it was her little piece of home ❤ I haven’t had it in so long because it’s hard to import but you brought my mum to tears seeing her country’s food

Gotta say, I'm from Serbia and Serbia didn't even cross my mind for the first one. Can't say I've ever seen a pljeskavica with nearly that much cheese, and I eat one about once a week

Would love to see more South African dishes looked at. There's so many of us here in London but I don't feel like our cuisine gets a lot of attention. You have to try the koeksisters, either hot and fresh or frozen!
