Easy method:
Let three numbers in GP be-> a/r, a, ar
According to question a/r+a+ar=21 means (a+ar+ar^2)/r=21 <--- Equation(1)
Also, given - (a/r)^2+a^2+(ar)^2=189

Observe A=(a/r), B=a, C=ar
That means we know A+B+C=21 and A^2+B^2+C^2
We can apply formula
21^2=189+2(AB+BC+CA)
Put values of A, B, C; A=(a/r), B=a, C=ar

21^2=189+2a*(a+ar+ar^2)/r
Put (a+ar+ar^2)/r=21 from Equation(1)

21^2=189+2a*21

21-9=2a

a=2
Now put this in
(a+ar+ar^2)/r=21 <--- Equation(1)

Solve quadratic to get r=1/2, 2

I tried to solve 1+r+r^2 and 1+r^2+r^4 as two separate GPs and then solve the equation but the answer is not matching, can you please share the solution with that approach @raviprakash
