I grew up around a lot of Amish people. They’re insanely kind, tough, honest, and hardworking people. Seriously, they all have hearts of gold. They serve God through communion and acts of service. They take their beliefs and values very seriously, they’re more than satisfied with their way of living over ours. The only thing that I’ve ever seen upset an Amish person is when their way of life is disrespected or blatantly disrupted. Don’t take pictures of them, don’t mock their beliefs or try to pressure them into something you know goes against who they are. Basically everything that the Nelk Boys did, do not do. The Amish show love, respect and hospitality towards all people - so you should do the same for them.

I live in Pennsylvania, not far from one of the largest amish and Mennonite communities in the U.S. and although I definitely have my issues with some of their policies and practices in the church when it comes to things like mental health, where they will basically lock someone up for weeks on end by themselves if they are experiencing manic episodes and many more less than great practices but, they are extremely kind, independent, industrious, respectful, modest and humble individuals that really don’t deserve this kind of hardship, especially if it compromises their faith in the eyes of the Amish community, as they can quickly become shunned out of the community by friends and family alike, being forced to comply and leave their communities, families and faith behind to try and starts over in a world they didn’t grow up in and don’t recognize nor fully understand. A task that they are likely not capable of doing on their own in a world they’ve never known. Trying to “corrupt” an Amish man for views is disgusting, especially when you consider the very dire potential consequences for the individual.
