Grade 12/ Matric Mathematics May/June 2021 Paper 1 Question 1 Algebra (Past Paper)

In this video I cover question 1 of the 2021 May/June past exam paper for math paper 1. The question covers algebra that is done from grade 10 to 12. The question looks at factorizing, finding the roots, exponents, solving simultaneous equations. I give a good explanation on why its important to solve inequalities using a graph and explain some basic Exponent rules.

Q1.3 is impossible, if you graph
(2^x)(3^y) = 24^6,
you get an equation with infinitely many values for both x and y
for the equation
y = log(base3)[(24^6)(2^-x)]
e.g. (0, 17.3567) (18, 6) etc.
Furthermore, defining a value of
x - y,
is the same as saying
y = x - log(base3)[(24^6)(2^-x)]
which also gives you infinitely many values for both x and y

Sure, you can say e.g.
2^x = 2^2 thus x = 2
but this property of exponents does not work with exponents of different bases

Then again, the question would have been possible to answer if the question asked for *_a_* value of
x - y
However, the question asked for *_the_* value of
x - y, where there isn't a definite answer.
