12B is as dark as the 14B but has even less graphite shine!!! I use 12B pitt matt for my darkest tones when drawing!!

You really put that pencil through its paces! I'm amazed that it has such a wide range. Gotta try it 😀! And Thanks!

So I bought all of these pencils, and MORE, and I found the following when drawing them next to each other:
1. Faber-Castell 14B is dark, but not incredibly dark. It still leaves some "greyness" than other pencils, and shines a little in light, so not as matte. However, it is a decent even pencil.
2. The darkest pencil I have right now is Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black 8B pencil. It is VERY matte, and also noticeably darker. The entire line is much darker, actually.
3. I even tried a 5.6mm brand "Pacific Arc" at 12B etc, and these turn out greyer than Faber Castell.

So this video did do a good job introducing me to other types of darker colors, however the true golden child of darkness seems to be (unless someone has a different suggestion, I am totally all ears open), Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black 8B. I DESPERATELY want a lead pencil which, when drawn, is pure matte black kinda like that VantaBlack paint that absorbs 99% of all light.

This video is giving me major deja vu from the Kirsty Partridge art video "If this pencil works, it will change your life."

Nice video. Try Cretacolor Nero extrasoft, soft and medium pencils. You will love them! Better than the Pitt Matt

14B almost sounds like a hyperbolic joke, like a 16-blade razor or a V30 car engine.

It seems that the price has gone up. I really want to try one of these but nearly 7 USD is too much for me to spend on a single pencil. That darkness sure is alluring though. I'm just too poor right now to justify my desire for deeper contrast.
Thank you for the great video.

Well graphite is an allotrope of carbon, it would seem that pure carbon works better for non reflection in comparison to its molecular counterpart.

Interesting. So I gather from this comparison that if reduced shine is paramount, one should stick with the Staedtler?

Very informative video, thank you. I was wondering though, if you had the staedler, that seemed darker and more matt, would you even need this one?
Also, have you ever tried blending with a makeup brush or blending brush? They work nicely for me.

Reminded of the adage, "A poor workman blames his tools."....

You forgot to test some permanent fixative on a finished drawing – most graphite work needs a protective coating. Agree also that Conte produce one of the darkest tones

I hate to be an ass but. a 2H pencil is not the hardest pencil 5H is harder than 4h, 4h is harder than 3h and 3h is harder than 2h and so on.

But it’s not the main thing it was advertised for. It’s NOT MATTE. If that’s the one feature a person was looking for, then it has failed.
