Crimson Tide is a 1995 American submarine action thriller film directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. It takes place during a period of political turmoil in Russia, in which ultranationalists threaten to launch nuclear missiles at the United States and Japan.

The film focuses on a clash of wills between the seasoned commanding officer of a U.S. nuclear missile submarine (Gene Hackman) and his new executive officer (Denzel Washington), arising from conflicting interpretations of an order to launch their missiles. The story parallels a real incident during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

It stars Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, George Dzundza, Viggo Mortensen, James Gandolfini, and Matt Craven

Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington are going at it in a very powerful scene...

With the fate of the world at stake, it came down to Orders, Chain of Command, and personality types...

Hackman has the ability to be threatening while being cool at the same time. Doesn't get any better than this!

"Crimson Tide" was the first "R-Rated" film that I saw as a young man who had decided early on (3rd grade) that I would become an Officer in the United States Military. I was on a trip to Austin, Texas, and I asked my parents to take me to see this film. My conservative, Christian parents agreed and I have watched this film deep underground in bunkers after I became a Commissioned Officer in the USAF (ICBMs). The responsibility of what we could have had to do was something that hit me on each nuclear alert. I thank the Lord daily that we never had to.

I never served on submarines, but know the procedures well, and still cannot speak of them. However, I can see the consternation in each of these character's faces, and this is exactly what they are..."characters". As someone who went on to deploy multiple times, and someone who left the faith I grew up in for a time, I came back to my faith many years ago (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). This film covers so many things I saw in the military, and one thing many likely don't realize is how the "COB" (aka: "Chief of the Boat"), the highest ranking enlisted man (or woman depending on who is serving in that role) defied the Captain's order at the risk of charges of insubordination, or possibly treason depending on how the Captain would have characterized the charges against him.

We are living in "interesting times" and this clip came across in the algorithm and gave me extreme pause. I feel we are on the precipice of something very large and I pray it is not nuclear annihilation of our world. The heavy weight of signing for custody of those "keys" never hit a false note with me. I met some of my closest brothers and sisters who I haven't spoken to in year, and may never speak to again in this life (those in the military know what I am speaking of). I pray for peace, but I pray mostly that people will believe in the saving Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

What a man? What a life? We should all be grateful for the time he spent with us until he and his loving wife had to depart. RIP Gene and Becky Hackman

As a navy vet, I love this this movie.
Normally, I would not watch a great video clip that has been altered with an unexperienced opinion and/or meatball comic relief.
This one, however... was outstanding. I would have been thinking the same thing. Wish you had kept going. The elevator music was superb.
Well done, Tom!

Sad to see him go. Part of the fabric of my life is the movies that I grew up with. I am sixty years old this year so I have watched him all the way through his career. Godspeed Hackman.

This was one of the roles he knew how to play very well. On other occasions, such as in the films Behind Enemy Lines, Uncommon Valor and Bat 21, he acted perfectly in all of them. A truly unique actor.

Hackman was always one of my favorite actors, he held the same acting caliber as of Jack Nicholson, he always worked hard in any role he had, whether the blind man in young Frankenstein, Lex Luther in Superman, etc. R.I.P Gene Hackman

Apparently the movie is based on a true story, some say its something that happened on a soviet sub during the cuban missile crisis
