my dad lived in a socialist/communist Soviet union for much of his life. He worked as a machinist in large factorie/s and says one of the reasons the idea doesn't work is because people are lazy. Nobody wants to work. You get paid the same if you slack or hustle. People had basically no motivation

No matter what system there is, there will always be pros and cons as they are all based on humans with different ideas of how things should be, which is all according to how they were raised - selfish or giving, individualized or community-based. And everything can work if limits are in place to prevent the extreme from happening. So far, there are few places that have a perfect system worked out.

Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, etc. are NOT socialist at all. They are market economies with a social safety net. Welfare systems and social ownership of the economic means of production are two entirely different things.
EVERY Nordic country has NO minimum wage. They have lower corporate taxes, and less red tape (freer markets), allowing for more people to avoid paying high income taxes by opting to invest it into the economy themselves. This leads to more economic growth without the need for government to get involved in trying to stimulate it. It's the exact OPPOSITE of how socialism works.

You forgot to mention Chile, 1970. A Democratic Socialist country that was doing just fine until America invaded them.

People keep talking about how socialism never evolves into communism cause the ones who promote it end up concentrating power to themselves instead of sharing it equally. True. But also capitalism which is supposed to let people have chances at class flexibility (moving up in class through working hard and smart) often times doesnt work, cause although markets are "free" they are run by titan companies that create monopolies that last for decades and squander the chances of any bright mind realizing a good idea.
