This video is part one of a four part series on glaciers. Glaciers are moving rivers of ice on land. A glacier will continue to grow as long as the rate of ice formation in the zone of accumulation is greater than the rate of ice melting in the zone of ablation. Periods when glaciers advance are known as glaciations. Periods when glaciers retreat are known as inter-glacials. Most of the video footage was taken in the South Island of New Zealand. Some clips came from Sichuan Province in China.
Satellite images in the video are provided by Google and its map data providers.
