How did Russia break through Kyiv air defense to hit children’s hospital?

Russia launched one of its deadliest attacks against Ukraine on July 8, killing over 40 people and injuring almost 200.
One of the targets in Kyiv was the Ohkmatdyt hospital, Ukraine’s largest children’s medical center, prompting condemnations from world leaders and pledges of more air defense capabilities to Ukraine.

Fabian Hoffmann, a defense expert and doctoral research fellow at the University of Oslo, explains how Russian forces managed to evade advanced air defenses in Kyiv to strike the hospital, whether Moscow has developed a new tactic of air attacks, and why Ukraine needs to be allowed to hit targets deep inside Russia.

If you look at the trajectory of the missile that hit, it's obvious how it got through. Two cruise missiles flew past Kyiv closely past the northwest to northeast then sharply turned back and headed straight for kyiv. The air defense personnel have to make decisions when to shoot these down or not because they cannot waste their limited supply of surface to air missiles. So when they saw the cruise missiles were missing Kyiv, they let them pass. They likely did not expect that sharp U-turn they took thereafter and, did not see it or react in time. They have been more distracted by the Khinzal hypersonic missile that was coming toward them from the east at the same time.
