B-58 Hustler | 10 Years at Mach 2 - Part 1

The Convair B-58 Hustler was a technology marvel of the Cold War. The first operational supersonic bomber has left a long lasting echo in popular culture, but it was also a blunder. Beautiful to see, the B-58 was short lived and plagued with problems.
This is the first video of a series dedicated to this iconic bomber.

The plane made famous in the rather good movie "Fail Safe". Where of course it was re-christened the ''Vindicator''.

I agree with the inicial statement sir. And besides being a weapon I think the B-58 airframe is a beautiful sculpture.

The front landing gear must always make 😬😬😬 about that sharpet tip <- 😆...beautiful airplane ❤️.. In my opinion the B 58 and the Mjassischtschew M50 are the two most beautiful bomber designs ❤️❤️.. But for a terrible goal.

Two things that are remarkable in this video. 1) When you look at the Hustler, it appears like is just went out of service a few years ago. It looks that futuristic. Then you see the mid 50s cars that the crew scrambled out to the pad in and you realize they look like they came from different centuries. 2) It is readily apparent that the B-58 pushed way beyond the state of the art when you look at its bigger, older brother, the B-36-the previous bomber offering from Convair!

The crew that flew the trans atlantic speed record to Paris, were they were awarded with the one time, 2000KMPH+ average speed Bleriot trophy, only to die in a flight accident at the show there.

4:31 The B-36 was not a turboprop, it used radial piston engines.

One of the most spectacularly alluring aircraft of the jet age. Every line, reeks of speed, looks like its going mach 2 parked on the ramp.

I first drew the b58 back in high school, in college copying from archive 1950s electronic magazine and just redrew last Nov 3 in my IG. The bomber is sleek and with pros and cons. I even drew bgen James Steward with a tiny b58 although the flight was the promotional for the b58, somehow scared the Russian thats what some forum said it.

I recall having an old book titled something like "Aviation and Space Dictionary" way back when I was younger -- the book was easily 10 years old by then. It had a full-page b/w photo of the B-58 and I was always browsing to that page (rest of the book was also very interesting for someone who was into science and technology). Thought it was one of the coolest looking planes I've seen, and I still think so to this day.

The B58 was used to develop an unusual ejection seat (or i should say, an ejection capsule)

When we look at the period from 1930-1965.... 35 years, the development of aircraft is nearly unbelievable. Seriously if you asked any person throughout recorded history prior to 1900 what the world would look like in they would say about the same as their time.

My grandfather was born in 1889 and lived until 1982. He literally went from a world where horses ruled travel and left a world where aircraft defined travel. He even saw the space shuttle operate!

The hustler had to seem like something literally out of science fiction to his world.... science fiction was a new concept!

This plane became a unicorn hunt for me when I was a kid because it was my grandfather's favorite. I finally saw one in person when he and I visited Pima Air Museum. One of my favorite memories.

You have a knack of surprising me with such a variety of topics for videos. And all of them are wonderfully and clearly informative.

A splendid explanation on an aircraft that remains largely forgotten and with reason.

2:00 " It never fired a shot in anger " ... well that's the name of game or the purpose of deterrence. From an Officer with 36 years of duty "" War is hell, even if it's a Cold War ! ""
