His selections make southgate seem like a genius

not to mention he also said before the tournament that he liked the Inter core of players and then after elimination said that Inzaghi had let the inter players intensity drop off after winning Serie A

He picked FAGIOLI, a player who has been sudpended all year because of the betting scandal

Who drops locatelli and orsolini for fagioli and el shaarawy?

Quality, you can't expect to do well in a tournament three years going from midfield Veratti, Jorginho, Locatelli to Fagioli, Miretti, Frattesi and defence from Spinazzola, Bonnuci, Chiellini, Di Lorenzo to Cambiasso, Gatti, Dimarco, Bellanova, Buongiorno. Serie A teams is also at fault for never developing their youth and sending them on loan to Amateur teams in Serie C and lower for game time. No one is surprised they missed consecutive WC running their federation like this. 🤷‍♂️

I guess that’s why he said after the tournament he needed his squad to become younger. So that they will listen to him but the football he played was so awful no wonder his group threw him under the bus.

Spaletti's team selection was questionable and Italy had literally no control in midfield in any of their games. They couldn't string more than 2-3 passes together

Was surprised he got the job in the first place.

Man just being himself... No surprises

Honestly choosing El Shaarawy is already questionable enough

Talking about "surrounded by poison from all side", he were being toxic himself. Spaletti should look in the mirror who's been poisonous this whole time.

I think one reason is that the guy played chiesa on the rw a guy who can just shoot in so many different ways the attack was atrocious scamacca and retegui were getting crosses but not good quality crosses

If he wanted to play counter attack why not start the small & speedy Raspadori instead of tall & slow Scammaca?

"slick football"

Yeah, that's why he went wrong. Italy was NEVER slick. They do play progressive football but you are insane if you expect slick from Italy (unless you're Baggio).

That's why that Gilardino's flick is legendary (that was never Italy style)

Only Gasperini can make Italy competitive again

Italy has been underwhelming since the Euros in 2012.Its either many people have failed to notice or the Italian team is just living in a past paradise. The Azzure Blue Glory days are long long over.

No more than he deserves really, acted like he was too good for Napoli after coasting to the least competitive serie A in a long time. When toxic environments follow a coach for this long it’s rarely if ever a coincidence and that entirely ignoring his dismal squad selection

3 general points

1) players, especially in attack, are not good enough. Scamacca had a solid season, but the fact that a Europa League striker became the automatic first choice Italy CF speaks volumes. Chiesa has great talent but has wasted time, fitness, confidence, and form at Juventus. He has regressed since the 2021 Euro Cup. The rest? Pellegrini, El Shaarawy, Zaccagni, Retegui, Raspadori wouldn’t be called up to the bench of the other European giants. Bang average.

2) not good enough manager. Spalletti had roughly 3-4 good seasons in his career: the ones at Roma with “false 9 Totti”, and Napoli 2022-23. He and Napoli got lucky winning the Scudetto, but that doesn’t mean he was worthy of leading Italy into a Euro Cup.

3) terrible tactics. The majority of Italy’s starting XI played for Inter, Juve, and Roma— all of them have mostly used 3 man backline for years (De Rossi only changed this at Roma a few months ago). Why does Spalletti then play Italy with a 4 man backline? Scamacca isn’t used to playing alone up front. Chiesa hasn’t played as a true winger in years. Pellegrini has never shouldered the creative burden as the sole no.10 before.
