The deep red sunset was caused by the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in 1883. It was one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions ever and the reason why the man is covering his ears is because the loudest sound to ever be recorded came from this eruption.

Another backstory I’ve heard of this painting is that the creator, Edward Munch, had a sister in a mental asylum and on the other end of that asylum was a slaughterhouse connected by a bridge (the one in the painting). Edward would walk back and forth between this bridge and go insane from the screams coming from the slaughterhouse and the asylum and thats why the painting was made, to represent the screams he heard from either end of the bridge. I don’t know which is true or not but I heard the story from my art teacher so I though I’d share.
