Some people have claimed this has happened even with the original chargers. In that case it’s probably just a faulty/ broken charging port. Meta has yet to release a statement about it, but they do seem to be replacing the units with this issue for free.

That moment when a VR headset worth hundreds of dollars can't limit the charge it receives, something even the cheapest phones have. Truly a Meta moment

If it can't handle high voltage chargers, Oculus needs to recall these and force the charging chip to only take lower voltage/wattage. This isn't a consumer failure this is a product failure. USB Type C is supposed to communicate between the charger and product so this doesn't happen.

If you've had it apart, you'd see the port itself is secured by melted plastic pins, it's not screwed solid to the shell, port movement when inserting connector could also cause resistance, it's always the port, never the cable or plug which should tell you where the issue is.

That's why I used the oculus cable that came with it in the box

Any device should be able to be charged with any type C cable and charger, given they're good quality ones. This means to me, that there's a serious design flaw in the charge controller if it requests higher power than standard 5V, and it causes damage to the port, because no type C spec supply provides higher power until negotiation occurs. Alternatively, the ports are getting worn out from the weight of the cable hanging off, and eventually getting loose connections. A loose connection can dissipate and waste quite a bit of energy as heat, and melt itself. Interesting failure mode.

Its the VR headset that kills you when you die in-game but this kills you when it wants :P
