Businesses all across Maui are taking a hit, and not just those destroyed by the fire. A lot of Maui businesses depend on tourist dollars. And their message is: Maui needs responsible tourism.

This should not be a concern this soon after such a tragedy. As a state we need to have some kind of big get together like a convention/ think tank/ ect based around what other ways we can make money as an island economy. We need to think of not just what existing businesses would work here but what new types of business and future emerging business would benefit from our unique location and conditions. we need business that can benefit from being here while respecting the land and the culture of the islands. Tourism will always be here but it shouldn’t make up the majority of our economy or anything close to it.

It is sad, but the hollywood celebs and loud mouths complained about the tourists coming. Can't have it both ways. They should pay these businesses out of pocket for hurting the tourism.

A tough situation. Business owners should be receiving financial support so they don’t have to lay people off. Since tourists have been warned away, visitor numbers will inevitably be low for the next couple of years. The community needs time to heal, too. A lot of Lahaina residents have been trying to grieve and work at the same time. That’s not right. Everyone copes with disaster differently. West Maui was hit hard, but other parts of the island are still able to host visitors and non-resident property owners. Some combination of isolating Lahaina to protect and rebuild that community, and allowing other coastal and upcountry communities to continue to operate, must be found. Let’s hope the governments will listen to the locals and come up with a workable solution. It’s only been a few weeks. Good luck, Maui. We’re pulling for you.
