Old Timer Taught Me This! Passing it on to The Next Generation.

How to check & stop engine blowby with a balloon! Many years ago a old timer shared this with me & I would like to pass it on to future generations. Blowby can cause oil consumption even the oil seal to leak.
All cars have blowby the first place to start is to see how bad the blowby is. so how much blowby is to much?

You can slow down or stop leaks even increase compression as cylinder rings are worn with excessive wear. Thats the cause of blowby. The pcv system or pcv valve other wise know as positive crankcase ventilation system is meant to stop poor emissions by rerouting the blowby into the intake so it can be reused for the combustion process. One of many problems can be solved check and clean the pcv valve. here on Nates interactive auto NIA. Direct injection engine or gdi can accumulate carbon buildup on the intake valves as a result because the blowby has oil vapor and a oil catch can could help. so if you are burning oil or see black smoke make sure to check previous videos as i show how to stop or fix the problem at the least slow down oil burning. loss of power poor performance fuel economy mpg. You can you tell if there is to much blow by. Lucas fuel injector cleaner works.

This Is Why Disabling Dislikes Was A Mistake..

Thats normal crankcase pressure being released not blow by

Words of wisdom: just because they're an old timer does not automatically mean they know wtf they're talking about.

Nice hole in the baloon and all the oil most of the way up the clear tubing.

This is like putting a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound .

We are all just a little bit dumber from having watched this video.

This video should be called "PISTON RING BLOWBY". This is normal. When the cylinder fires, some of that pressure ( gases from the EXPLOSION in the cylinder ) goes past the piston rings into the crankcase. This pressure has to be released from the crankcase some how (PCV valve). PCV, positive crankcase ventilation.

Over time as the piston rings wear, there will be MORE blowby. That stuff he added to the gas is basically an oil of some kind. Just something extra to pollute the air as it burns. I'm not saying it won't work, I'm saying you don't need it.

I'm an old man now and I've had automotive training so I know what I'm talking about.

An old-timer taught me the same thing but used condoms.

you cant stop blowby with crap in a can when the rings are toast. seals will only leak oil not cause blowby . you added lucas to the gas tank not the engine that will smoke like a 2 stroke . if it actually had blowby it would blow oil out the breather tube and back into the intake and then burn it in the engine and smoke .

Poking a hole in the balloon really fixed that engine! We could still see the bubbles in the clear tube. Next time, use a black tube.

Look at the tube and the balloon...at the end of the video, the blow by is almost at the balloon. It also appears that the balloon has a small hole or tear in it which is why it's not inflating anymore.

As a 4th generation mechanic this makes me cringe

An old Diesel mechanic taught me to just take the line from the rocker case and put it in the chassis rail. Anti rust anti blow by! $0

If you don’t understand why you have blow by then dont even touch your engine!

Sometimes "Old Timers" are not someone you wanna listen to... I had some "Old Timer" try to tell me how to biuld a 350 engine once he thought "RV Cam and "Headers" was a biult motor 🤦🏼🙄

Looks like the balloon was cut at the end of the video. You could see something trying to come up the tube.

To properly measure crankcase pressure and set crankcase pressure is an engineering strategy which requires mass flow rate evacuation from the crankcase which can overcome cylinder blow-by and produce a pressure drop below the piston to protect piston seal, enable piston oil drainage, prevent ring flutter, preventing seals from blowing out and oil leaks, and keep oil from being sucked up through the rings during intake stroke. This is called PCV and it requires an AIR FILTER pressure drop at wide open throttle on gasoline engines. There is a video in my channel showing how I cheaply easily measured the set crankcase pressure on my 5.3L Turbo 600rwhp daily driver gl

Look close at the tube and balloon at the end of the video. The balloon is broken, allowing gas to escape and oil is surging in the tube.

Glad to see so many experts here calling out this blatant misinformation. We live in a world where so many people have an irrational mistrust of experts. As a mechanical engineer it pisses me off so much. The average person with very little knowledge of a subject can be so easily fooled because they trust what they see or read on the internet implicitly, and because it fits their already preconceived notions. We need to trust the experts guys! They know what they are talking about!

All that lucas does is make the oil thicker. so you can save money by using higher viscosity oil

Sometimes you can free up those oil rings by dumping some sea foam or wd40 down through the spark plug hole and letting it sit overnight, also marvel mystery oil. If that fails use 20-50 on the next oil change 😆🤷‍♂️
