Beware online 'filter bubbles' - Eli Pariser

As web companies strive to tailor their services (including news and search results) to our personal tastes, there's a dangerous unintended consequence: We get trapped in a "filter bubble" and don't get exposed to information that could challenge or broaden our worldview. Eli Pariser argues powerfully that this will ultimately prove to be bad for us and bad for democracy.

These kind of filters makes an extremist of all of us; Conservatives become more conservative and liberals become more liberal. Hopefully, we can switch these kind of filters on or off.

Youtube is guilty of this especially since their last interface change. This is a serious issue. I am glad to see it finally getting some much needed awareness.

this is a bigger problem than most would realise, children will be exposed to the internet at earlier and earlier ages, if this "filter bubble" persists, their information feeds will be based on their first click. you can imagine what this might do for a child

Writing a paper on this related to news consumtion amongst high school youths. Much research says that the risk to become isolated is there, but is probably very unlikely. Internet allows People to have a broader variety of news sources. Also there is a problem with desinformation and information that is irrelevant that leads to People thinking they are informed in a certain matter when they're really not

I'm so happy the filter bubble did not filter out this video. i used to think Internet is totally transparent and a click to see all over the world. Now that's a 1st world problem.

It appears that your comment has been counted twice (before this post), skewing the numbers of replies to the topic.

It's of no consequence, and I don't think that you in particular need to know this, but it was an interesting data point (to me, at least).

I think these informational imbalances are what allow people to pass through energetic dimensions of ingrained mental awareness and preference and they can discover spiritual emotional tuning in which through your ability to imitate and understand people's perspectives you can enter people's personal spaces and your human environment can be easily subdued and manipulated, almost to the point where you can drag people into mental illnesses/mental awarenesses and bury them in the loss of their loved ones and lost values. This is a huge concern that needs to be shared, we need to protect our egos as not to self hate or else we will be controlled, manufactured and battled to the point where we need robotic parts and massive amounts of medical treatment to aid our new physical health losses and it will seem so necessary almost as if you reach the point where you can become so at a loss of your identity and purpose that you have to express our drainages by creating war with everything, return to the mainstream but the mainstream will be split between satanists/world destroyers and doctors: human developers and sustainers, we'll return to our childhoods but it will seem so foreign and cut off from the mainstream, they're focusing on extremist self development which means changing and progressing constantly, we begin to lose our emotions and our care and awareness dwindles to almost nothing. You'll just feel so imbalanced and disconnected from the stability of your relationships, institutions will reward you more than your friends and family in return for your slavery. You'll forget how to communicate, you'll get attached to old information, you'll feel trapped, but this is also a beautiful thing. Because you are growing used to many amounts of information, use it to our advantage, create your own universe for the first time ever, a universe you rule, a universe set up to your soulmate, and you can choose how to design her/him/them and keep in touch with everyone's creations, as many as you can handle and lock down a crew of people that share the same values as you. Maybe one day go to a concert and unite with large groups of people.

We need a website like IMDB where you get information about all websites around the world. But FB is the biggest fail of human anyway.

It's sad to see one of the only things our species has created that I'm proud of, corrupted in such a way. The internet is still free to those who look hard enough for their information, but the casual people who don't care will be affected by this.

Yeah, YouTube's suggestions have become more like this, it's boringafying the Internet. I want to be challenged, not pandered to.
