When Simon was protecting Marceline in the flash back ep he sings the cheers theme to try and stay grounded in reality. Them showing cheers as simon’s coping mechanism is a nice call back.

Oh god I felt that. The readying to hit the alarm clock before it even goes off. That hits me right in the feels. You can feel Simon's potent apathy in this episode. He's going through the motions of the day as if pretending to be human, to be real. The alarm isn't about waking up anymore, it's about signaling that it's time to do things. He's going through the motions but is so disconnected from everyone and everything he doesn't even realize that he can't hide it anymore. He is so drained that he doesn't even seem to be getting any real sleep. So damn sad

As some one who has spent a lot of time being depressed, Simon being nostalgic for that madness/sadness feeling is relatable. You feel comfortable in that state you were in for so long and though you know it wasn’t healthy it was at least familiar

In the end, Simon recovered his sanity, but at what cost? He is now in a world he doesn't know anything about, people look down on him. He might as well be a fossil to them, Betty is not around anymore, and he is depressed. Yeah, as the Ice King, he was crazy, but he was happy, and has awesome Ice magic, powerful enough to fend for himself in this world

Leave it to Adventure Time to come back in 2023 and give us one of the most accurate portrayals of depression I've ever seen in my life.
Seriously, i was so uncomfortable watching this episode, remembering these feelings. I hope my boy Simon finds peace soon
