It’s also kind of weird to assume “if some animals do it, then I should too!” When those animals eat it because it’s a bloody organ and the smell could attract predators.

I am glad an actual medical professional is providing facts .

Just a reminder, my dog eats his own vomit and crap.

Animals that eat their placenta do it for one or two reasons: to replenish some nutrients and energy after birthing, and/or to get rid of any smell that may attract predators or other unwanted "visitors". While we could make a case about getting some nutrients back, we don't need to do that, you can just have a good meal after giving birth!

I asked to see the placenta. The OB sighed and said, she wants to keep the placenta, to the midwife. No I do not, I just want to see it!! The midwife was so excited to dissect it for us. It was so interesting.

Eating human organs, even if it is one’s own, is not something I can consider. I would think that most cultures would have issues with it.

I appreciate so much that you just provided the available facts without judgement. I remember reading about this practice decades ago, and it was always presented with obvious bias. (I saw for, and against.) Thank you.

I always enjoy pointing out that consumption of a placenta is partial cannibalism.

The midwife asked me if I wanted my daughter's placenta after she was born, I'm guessing a lot more people are taking them home nowadays, I briefly considered burying it in the veggie patch but decided they could chuck it out.

I think the real issue here is that many people who sell the service are very unethical. They guilt new parents with the "your baby deserves the best you" and "do what nature intended you to do" and often rag on modern motherhood talking about how bad it is and how far we have strayed from nature, and then they charge up to $1000 to do the service, which is, as you said, unregulated.

I started school last week with the goal of becoming an RN. I know you're a doctor, not a nurse, but you're one of my role models. Thanks for inspiring me to finally start pursuing my dreams!

Haha! Great video!! I had my first placenta encapsulated and also had an imprint of it when my first son was born. It was done at my home. I took the pills and I think they helped with my mood. I gave birth 2 years later and I was quite a different experience altogether, no imprint, encapsulation or doula. I was told they could help your hormones too during menopause.

I think people do amazing artwork with the imprints of the placentas because they look like trees with an amazing root system that helped sustain the life of your baby. The body does amazing things!

I was once kicked out of a Facebook moms group for saying that eating a placenta was too dangerous and not proven to be beneficial. Facebook moms groups are so bad! 😂

In the UK the rules for encapsulation are strict because they have to follow the food standards agency. Also, encapsulation is about £200 here.

Mine was super infected, so that would have been a no go

My sister's midwife once tried to convince her to put her placenta in with the beans that were being cooked for dinner. It didn't work, sister is still grossed out by that 11 years later.

Great conclusion as always!! So many channels know that viewers want a simple and concrete answer and are afraid of listing the nuances of the situation.

I saw a show on HBO years ago where this woman cooked up her placenta and served it to her party guests. Yes they knew they were eating placenta. They came over to sample it. I was absolutely mortified.

Right now I have a lot of worry and anxiety over the placenta. My daughter has complete Placenta-previa and will have to have a preterm delivery, about 5 weeks early. Oddly she has no associated risk factors that usually suggest this might happen. This is her first child and she is a very healthy lady. I am trying not to worry. But Grampa does worry.
