back in the mid 1990s I watched a USAF film showing a C5 Galaxy on approach to a US Airfield. What was interesting is there was nothing to see for a while, then there appeared a large silver disc approaching us at speed, but as the aircraft passed through the inversion layer it turned into the C5 at a slightly lower speed than it first appeared as. The commentary with the video stated the plane would normally have been in sight well before the time the film started, but it was initially hidden by the inversion layer, then shown as a distorted image for a minute, before becoming normal. In the years since then I've seen some clips from that same video being promoted as video of a UFO in the air. However, I'm not sure the effects of inversion layers is relevant to the Titanic situation

Seems like science has figured out how Jesus could walk on water.

This one also explain why the captain's fix on his position was 20 miles off.
After mirage affects the apparent position of the Stars.
Then there would be no way to get an accurate star fix.

Beware of idiots saying the earth is flat. They are clueless as to what mirages and refraction are.

The lookouts did not fail to see the iceberg in time. The U.S. testimony of seaman Scarrot was plain that five to eight minutes passed between the lookouts' warning bell and impact. As far as a mirage goes, there could have been none based on the weather conditions. But, the ice field behind the iceberg would have appeared hazy white -- as described by Fleet and Lee. And, the berg would have been silhouetted and appeared as a "black mass" just as the lookouts described.

I don't think the Titanic sank cause of a mirage, they didn't even have binoculars

In Titanic's case the iceberg couldn't of been a mirage because everything is freezing cold, & for a mirage to materialize, you need both cold & warm air

A cold water mirage cannot happen when the air is as cold as the water. Both were just below freezing -- within 2 or 3 degrees Fahrenheit of each other. The Titanic was traveling at 25 miles (22 knots) per hour, and the cold air had been present for over 4 hours, or 100 miles, into the Labrador current.

And a "soft horizon" is when the stars can be seen all the way down to the water on a very clear, moonless night, so that you can't tell where the sky ends and the water begins, because they are reflecting off the very dark water. It has absolutely nothing to do with a mirage. But what it does do is make it very difficult to tell the difference between a blinking Morse light and a blinking star.

And finally, distress rockets are fired many hundreds, even thousands, of feet in the air, far above any possible mirage were there even one. And the inquiry testaments prove the Californian's Second Officer, Herbert Stone, saw 8 rockets. So clearly it had no effects on him.
