You miss the _other_ obvious explanation (if you accept the more extreme age estimates)... That, millions of years ago, there was a dinosaur species capable of making iron hammers.

Maybe the rock formed around the hammer faster than they think, who knows. So the question is, how fast can that type of wood turn to coal?

Interesting debate below. I agree as to getting the wood handle carbon dated as well. What makes me suspicious is how come there is space around the hammer head? If rock formed around it shouldn't there be no space around the head? Couldn't one hollow out the rock to create a space for the head and place the head in it then shove the wood handle up a cut out hole to fill the head?
