My friend is an epidemiologist. I once saw a copy of Diamond's book sitting out at his place and I asked how he liked it. He said it was a great reading experience. He really enjoyed going through the book and underlying everything the author got absolutely wrong.

When you talk about being deep into Exodus i remember endless afternoons studying the text and commentary by Rashi with my Rabbinic Dad. I found it all difficult the whole thing because it was given to us as factual. “I believe with perfect faith that the Torah was given to Moses on Sinai”. It took a while to recover!! Now i keep well away. The memories of those dread hours…
I’m glad I don’t have a Brattle nearby. We would have even less space!
I trained as a pianist in London. My favourite music is Bach who dances and then tears one apart.
Take care Steve x

Thank you for mentioning the Divine Comedy series. I've been trying to select a volume to begin chipping away at my edifice to ignorance with. It was either going to be Beowulf, the Divine Comedy or the Bazooka Joe bubble gum wrappers.

Every time I reread Guns, Germs, & Steel, I immediately reread Victor Davis Hanson's Carnage and Culture.

Thanks for providing some warm commentary. I am sitting in an area with -40 degree windchill so it was a nice reprieve.

The Final Brattle...of 2022... bookending the year, look forward to your hauls from the Brattle in the New Year. Guns, Germs and Steel has been on my radar a while, why don't you like it?

Oh my goodness, I’m so happy we agree on Gun, Germs and Steel - hell, I don’t like anything I’ve read from Diamond. And the same impression you mention here always bubbles up: this is dumb.

And yet, a developmental economist I think highly of was just praising this recently on twitter. SO naturally, I’ve been considering rereading it too.

Louis Auchincloss is related distantly to the Mass congressman, correct?

Hello. Please Sir, How many languages can you read? It's obvious that you can read many languages. Is Arabic among the languages you read? Again, how many books did you write and publish? At the age of sixty two, one year away from my retirement, I am learning many important things from you. Forgive me Sir for my questions. Thanks a lot from Iraq

What the devil did he say?!
Guns, Germs & Steel is bad, dumb?!
Somebody buy a flounder at the
Boston Fish Market & give Steve
a good trout slap to knock
some sense in his fool head.
I’ll have you know Guns, Germs & Steel
is only the best book of the 20th century.
