We have 46, 000 stations. Presidential election results in Kenya can be unofficially determined by an organized and competent media house in the following way;
Using Excel spreadsheets which can be shared in a work group, an individual can slot in figures for each station and presidential candidate in 3 minutes. This adds up to 138, 000 minutes or 2, 300 Hours if done by one person. 1, 000 persons therefore do it in 2.3 Hours. Two teams of 500 persons each for cross-checking & accuracy purposes will use 4.6 Hours. Kenyan media stations should set up this temporary teams at election times, given public interest and lucrative nature of election years for media stations. They will be swift, accurate and allow IEBC negotiate legal minefields which delay official results announcement, and put political parties spurious, self-serving and contradictory tallies out of business. Time before official announcement by IEBC should be used to delve into data about voters’ interests, and not lazily keep asking “When will IEBC give us the numbers?” At this point in our democracy and systems, it is clear that IEBC figures should only be confirmatory. Any competent and reasonably resourced media company should be able to give us full provisional figures as IEBC had 90% publicly available by 11 pm on voting day, and 99% at 11 pm following day. Keeping Kenyans guessing the night after voting day at this point is disgraceful and blame lies squarely with our lazy media which lacks but loves to point fingers to others, but never address their inadequacies and shortcomings
