Spanish Historian here. Basically: Franco was regarded as an "ally" for the USA because of Spain's strategical geolocation, a point of entrance for both Europe and África. During the period of the Second Republic, while Spain's politics started leaning left after Primo de Rivera's dictatorship, the USA was increasingly wary that Spain might become an ally of the communist USSR. In July 1936, General Franco started a coup that originated the Spanish Civil War. After his rise to power, he started executing left-wingers, artists such as poets, writers, musicians and painters, communists, and basically any person dissident of his military dictatorship. Of course, seeing as Spain was now further than ever from becoming a problem to the USA, they started regarding him as a friend. But I mean, it's nothing new, Hitler was able to do whatever he wanted until the invasion of Poland, when it was made clear he would be a problem, because both the USA and its allied European countries would rather have a genocide next door, than someone who might not hate communists. They chose "the lesser evil" and the entire world had to suffer for it.

He killed 2 million of his own people be intentionally withholding food from them in an artificially induced famine! He's a monster, in the short video clips of him in this video you can see that he is a psycho. I didn't know he name was Haile, the same name as the Emperor he assassinated and buried underneath the desk in his office. Its a crime he still alive and well living the good live is Zimbabwe!
