It fits well on some songs and adds atmosphere like on The Unnamed Feeling, Shoot Me Again and Frantic, but some tracks like St. Anger and especially Dirty Window are better without it.

I think keeping the resonant snare sound but toning it down a little bit could've worked.

Damn right. Those drums are perfect just as they are. And now, funny enough, I kinda want to use a trash can lid as a cymbal just to hear how it would sound. The more loud ringing, the better, I say. I'll print out t-shirts that say "Raw Power was too quiet!"

The snare makes the album sound angry. It makes it sound unique. If you don't like the St. Anger snare, then dont listen to the album. It's as simple as that. The REAL issue with the album is the low quality sounding guitars. Sure, it makes it sound angry, but i feel like they're LOW QUALITY. Not bad, just low quality.
