While I know that NVC can be great with communicating with other people, the big a-ha moment for me is how I communicate with myself - especially after I've done something that I regret. I no longer beat myself up for it. NVC has giving me a self-empathy practice that has given me a sense of compassion for myself that I've never experienced before, and that I didn't even know was possible before. It's taken me years to practice. I still react in ways with other people that I regret, but I think I will improve on that as I continue to practice this needs-based consciousness that my needs actually matter & that the other person's needs actually matter.
A good friend is a full-time NVC coach and she doesn't use the word needs that much anymore - she just talks about "the experience you're wanting to have". RIP Marshall. I thank God for your life and your work every day!
