IL FRINGUELLO

Il Fringuello è un uccello di piccole dimensioni che misura circa 15 centimetri in lunghezza, apertura alare fino a 28 cm e peso di circa 20 grammi. Il maschio si differenzia dalla femmina per la livrea più colorata: mentre la femmina appare bruno-giallastra, il piumaggio del maschio comprende l’azzurro della testa, il verde del groppone, il rosa intenso del petto e il nero dell’estremità delle ali. Caratteristiche della specie, presenti in entrambi i sessi, sono le barre bianche presenti sulle spalle e sull’ala – molto evidenti quando l’uccello è in volo – e le timoniere esterne anch’esse bianche.
Nidifica in tutta l’Europa, dal Mediterraneo alle zone boreali. Ampiamente distribuito in tutti i Paesi Europei, in Scandinavia e Siberia raggiunge latitudini estreme, fin quasi al limite della vegetazione arborea. Lo si ritrova anche in Nord Africa, dal Marocco alla Libia, e negli arcipelaghi di Madera e delle Azzorre. È piuttosto comune nei boschi, tra alberi sparsi e cespugli, lungo le siepi, nei campi, nei frutteti e ovunque sia presente sufficiente vegetazione. In inverno, e recentemente anche durante il periodo riproduttivo, può giungere anche nelle periferie delle città dove è più facile trovare cibo.
Alle nostre latitudini la specie mostra un comportamento tipicamente sedentario ed è uno degli uccelli più diffusi e numerosi presenti sul suolo nazionale: nidifica infatti su tutto il territorio, dal livello del mare fino a quote superiori ai 2.000 metri, con densità maggiori nelle regioni settentrionali – specialmente nell’area alpina e appenninica – e minore abbondanza sulle coste nelle pianure continentali. Limitati vuoti di areale si registrano solo nelle Murge pugliesi e in Sicilia.
Il volo è “ondulato” e simile a quello degli altri Fringillidi. Territoriale in periodo riproduttivo, in inverno il Fringuello mostra un comportamento gregario, formando gruppi di dimensione variabile, frammisti a peppole, verdoni e lucherini. Si nutre di semi e frutti. In periodo riproduttivo, invece, una buona percentuale della dieta è costituita da invertebrati. Il nido è di solito costruito su alberi o cespugli, e ben mimetizzato tra muschi e licheni. Le uova, in genere 4 o 5, sono incubate per circa due settimane, mentre i pulcini lasciano il nido dopo 15-18 giorni dalla schiusa.

The male differs from the female by the most colorful livery: while the female appears brownish-yellow, the male's plumage includes the blue of the head, the green of the rump, the deep pink of the chest and the black of the ends of the wings. Characteristics of the species, present in both sexes, are the white bars on the shoulders and on the wing - very evident when the bird is in flight - and the external helmsmen are also white.
It nests throughout Europe, from the Mediterranean to the boreal areas. Widely distributed in all European countries, in Scandinavia and Siberia it reaches extreme latitudes, almost to the limit of the arboreal vegetation. It is also found in North Africa, from Morocco to Libya, and in the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores. It is quite common in the woods, among scattered trees and bushes, along the hedges, in the fields, in the orchards and wherever there is sufficient vegetation. In winter, and recently even during the reproductive period, it can also reach the outskirts of cities where it is easier to find food.
At our latitudes the species shows a typically sedentary behavior and is one of the most widespread and numerous birds present on the national soil: it nests throughout the entire territory, from sea level up to altitudes above 2,000 meters, with higher densities in the northern regions - especially in the Alpine and Apennine areas - and less abundance on the coasts in the continental plains. Limited area gaps are recorded only in the Apulian Murge and in Sicily.
The flight is "wavy" and similar to that of the other Finches. Territorial in the reproductive period, in winter the Chaffinch shows gregarious behavior, forming groups of varying size, mixed with brambles, greenfinches and siskins. It feeds on seeds and fruits. In the reproductive period, on the other hand, a good percentage of the diet consists of invertebrates. The nest is usually built on trees or bushes, and well camouflaged between mosses and lichens. The eggs, usually 4 or 5, are incubated for about two weeks, while the chicks leave the nest 15-18 days after hatching.
