WHY ARE CRUISE SHIPS WHITE?

Why is it that so many cruise ships are white? Not only cruise ships, but super yachts and smaller water craft are also predominately white.

Of course, there are multiple reasons, but in this video we look at the main, scientifically justifiable reason that so many vessels are white.

Lol Disney being all like "Don't you dare have a video that mentions our cruises!" Bummer you had to deal with that!

Old ships (steamships) were painted black because of the coal used. The coal dust would dirty the sides of the ships during the loading of coal into the side of the ship. A white ship would be difficult to keep clean. However the superstructures were often white for the same reason. Cooling. Steam trains are black for the same reason.

Interesting that towards the end of this video, it mentions that historically ocean liners had black hulls, and this is carried over into the Cunard and Holland America ships of today, but doesn't explain _why_ this was done. Therefore, I will step in: In the age of ocean liners in the early 20th century, most ships were powered by coal. This was loaded aboard through coaling ports along the hull, leading directly into coal chutes which conducted the coal down into the ship's bunkers. But coaling a ship was a messy business. Inevitably large black sooty stains of coal dust would run down the hull below each coaling port. Rather than cleaning the hull afte every refueling, the lines simply adopted the practice of painting the hulls of their ships black, thus concealing the coal dust. The upper decks of the ship's superstructure well above the coaling ports would not be affected by coal dust, and were therefore painted white.

OH MY GOD.
You can't just ask a cruise ship why it's white, you're so rude.

Fun fact, most ocean liners back in the day when steam was used, mostly had a black hull. This was because when loading coal (for the boilers) the hull wouldn't look as dirty since its already black

You have a talent for making your video titles pique my curiosity. I see them pop up in my scrolling and go "Yeeeeah, why *are* cruise ships painted white?" or "Yeeeeah, what *is* that bump on the front of a ship?"

To add the reason the older cruise lines generally have black (p&o being an exception to this even back 100 years ago) hulls is because back when coal was used when getting it on board it would stain the side of the ship so making it black meant the ugly marks from the coal would be less visable.
