Shadow’s shoes allow him to release chaos energy though his feet without destroying anything.

Sonic’s shoes allow him to run as fast as he wants without the issue of friction on his feet.

They both have their uses.

Brandon, you DO know that Sonic's shoes are special, frictionless shoes that help him run faster without hurting his feet or burning through all his shoes? Of course Sonic runs on grass and dirt. Shadow was brought up on the Space Colony ARK, with smooth metal floors where he'd slip and slide around whenever he tried to stop from any kind of speed, and frictionless shoes would be a nightmare.

I always thought the shoes allowed Shadow to have a slight hover so he didn't have to worry about friction while running. That's why there's more of a glide to his run conpared Sonic's.
