I love how he corrected "undead" to "non-dead", because "undead" would mean a bunch of zombies/revived skeletons driving cars.

There was actually a study on this. People are willing to accept a risk that is 1000x greater if they have control over it vs if they don’t have control

People aren’t okay with losing 5, 000 to bugs in a self driving ai’s software, but they are okay with losing 35, 000 to “bugs” in people brains “software”

“That’s great, sir, now can I finally see your driver’s license?”

It’s something I considered as well, the media jumps on any mishap relating to self driving cars as if that justifies them being bad or dangerous, when in fact en masse the likelihood is that roads will get safer.

In small numbers the lives saved versus lost might be unnoticeable. Scale it up and suddenly you’ve got potentially a fraction of fatalities you once had from conventional automobiles. But we have to get over that initial distrust, sadly like everything it’ll probably be a while before that net benefit is realised.

Don't worry, Neil, we'll find ways to keep the numbers up

“So how was traffic on your way here?”

It’s hard because if you’re normally a conscious and safe driver, if you die to an accident that you know wouldn’t have killed you had you driven your own car, it would suck

the key is CHOICE. humans need choice. ability to feel they had a say in how it works.

Context: Neil was asked what the traffic was like in LA

Great communicator, quite informed and knows how to reduce it for the lay man. Brilliant guy

People are infinitely more likely to take a risk that they feel like they are in “control” of than a risk they don’t feel like they are in control of.

I think everybody trust themselves to be a safe driver and they don't want to give up control to a machine that could have a bug even if it has less of a chance at killing them.

We need Tcast installed in all cars, where their onboard computer systems talk to each other, reacting to slow downs, speed limits, road conditions, etc.

The problem with Neil’s logic is that, even though less people die, it’s never the fault of the driver when self driving cars get into an accident. People would rather drive themselves EVEN THOUGH it’s less safe because they have more control over not getting into an accident.
